Is Lome under siege? In any case, there is a military presence in the capital to the point of worrying. What is happening ? Keep interviewing everyone who goes to their place of work.
The Minister of Safety and Emergency Preparedness may answer that it is to protect peaceful citizens and public property. But protect them from who or what? In a statement released last Monday, Yark Damehame said that a political party, a member of the Coalition, would prepare to cause unrest during the three days of march organized by the 14 opposition parties.
Without naming the party or giving more details about the nature of what was going on, he warned that arrangements will be made to discourage the authors of this project. That's what we actually see this morning.
Obviously, the points of the capital (far from the points of departure and arrival of the marches) which were always closed every time the Coalition of 14 announces a demonstration, are still militarized this morning. These places serve as sieves for the soldiers who filter the demonstrators who flock to the assembly points or simply prevent them from joining the march.
Outside these "well-guarded" areas, two trucks filled with policemen and gendarmes can be seen in Bè-Gakpoto, one of the demonstrators' meeting points. A few meters away, that is to say at the roundabout commonly known as Amina junction, are other trucks on board of which there are several soldiers waiting.
The same device is visible in the other meeting points of the event. In the city, heavily armed soldiers and gendarmes circulate in jeeps. "All this to intimidate us, but we are going out," said a protester this morning in Bè-Gakpoto.
In recent weeks, the events of the Coalition of 14 are organized in a peaceful way. We are wondering today the information available to the Minister of Security and Civil Protection to accuse a party of the Coalition and put all this device in place.
In any case we expect the end of the day to know what the first day of the events will be done.
