Hôpital de Bè: The other mask of Lomé

The Bè hospital, one of the major health facilities in the Togolese capital, is becoming a place that scares the sick and their loved ones. And for good reason, some doctors make the rain and the good weather in this hospital forgetting even that they have taken the oath to save lives.

Established to be one of the major formations of the No3 health district in Lomé, Bè Hospital has fallen for a while into a state of deliquescence until today it is transformed into a pétaudière where doctors make the law under their eyes Of the first responsible who are mute like a carp. Already in 2015, the press has largely echoed the drifts that occur daily in this busy hospital.

But the authorities seem not to pay particular attention to the situation.

Approximate management ...

In Health District No. 3, hospitals meeting hospital requirements are rare. Besides the Biasa clinic, the Altar of Eli and the hospital of Bè, the district no longer has any hospital worthy of the name. The first two are private health facilities, so they are reserved for citizens who have a certain financial ease. So, it is towards the hospital of Bè that the less affluent are directed. Thus, this center often displays complete. That said, funds should not be left in the caisses to maintain this hospital and equip it with the acceptable equipment to relieve the patients who use it. But the finding is quite contrary.

In the first place, the hospital building is in total disrepair. The walls are cracked in places. The pediatric building, for example, can collapse at any time. In some rooms, you can see the cracked tile. Electrical circuits that are left to the punch over the sick. "In this hospital ... it's anything. There are no beds, chairs, or sick people, three or four on the same bed. At the maternity level, pregnant women and those who have just given birth are grouped together on the same bed. The newborns are piled up on the same l it. We accompanying patients are sometimes obliged if we find no place to pose our buttocks to remain standing all the time. It's really deplorable, "says a lady whose daughter recently gave birth in this hospital. One wonders how, a hospital that welcomes so many people can not have simple beds. Bè Hospital officials have often sought to hide behind the plethora of patients they welcome. But this is an unfounded argument in that the years of accumulated revenue should enable them to make investments in equipment and the construction of other rooms. In addition, the building is not maintained properly. If not, how to explain the cracks in the balls. All this is undoubtedly the fruit of years of very rough management. But these are not the only problems in this hospital where obviously all is missing.
Doctors, drug sellers

Far from being treated comfortably, patients and their companions must also accommodate the moods and good wishes of certain doctors. Indeed, some physicians intervening in this hospital think rather of their pockets, first, rather than the recovery of the sick. These shabby doctors have set up scams and scams through drug sales. The system is described here by a man whose wife spent three weeks in this hospital. "Doctors give you a prescription, they say some medications are with them so you just have to give the money. Either when you have brought the medications, they keep some that they will eventually sell to other patients. If you claim or refuse to buy medicines at home, your patient will not be properly followed. For the slightest thing, they'll start by insulting you. But if you pay for medicines at home, it is the cordial expectation. It is a pity that people who are supposed to save lives behave in this way, "the outraged citizen explained.

Last week, according to testimonies gathered a child died out of pure negligence of the doctors. As the child suffocated at night, her mother quickly went to look for the doctors who were on duty. The latter have told him that they are coming. Minutes have passed, the doctors have not arrived. The lady had to go back and call them. And it was only after this umpteenth inquiry that the doctor came to examine the child. Then he left. Meanwhile, the patient's breathing began to falter. The tearful lady returned to call the doctor but the latter will not come immediately. A few minutes later, they came to see the child two. But the latter has already surrendered the soul. Fortunately, these kinds of scenes are now legions in the hospital of Bè. Could this child have been saved? Only God knows. But the behavior of the doctors who were on duty on that day, indicate a nonchalance in the care of this child. This is how patients lose their lives in Bè hospital.

To the health authorities, to come quickly to the rescue of the patients who resort to this hospital. At the risk of seeing the doctors continue to do their business while patients who could have been saved succumb.

Oruko Amutorunwa (Pre-Destined Names) In Yorubaland

Ibeji (Twins) In Yoruba land, one of the most important things done when a child is born is to give the child a name. This comes after the child’s ritual birth, massage of specific body parts and other rites as well. Names are given to the child by the father, mother, grandparents (paternal and maternal) and some close relatives also. But sometimes, the circumstance of a child’s birth will automatically give the child a name. This name is known as ‘orúko àmútọ̀runwá’ (pre-destined or generic name) in Yorubaland. The most common generic names (orúko àmútọ̀runwá) in Yoruba land are ‘Taiwo‘ and ‘Kehinde‘ (altogether known as Ìbejì) which are given to twins.
