ANC calls on people "to remain vigilant, mobilized and determined"

The National Alliance for Change (ANC), a member of the opposition coalition, recalls that the only solution to the current crisis is the return to the 1992 Constitution in its original form. In a statement, the party "calls on the Togolese people, including the diaspora, to remain vigilant, mobilized and determined."

ANC Communiqué

The socio-political crisis, which has been undermining our country for decades, is witnessing in recent months, with the massive mobilization of Togolese and Togolese people in cities and abroad, developments that show the deep and insurgency of this crisis with the firm determination of the populations to put an end to the regime of dictatorship which governs Togo for more than 50 years.

Through peaceful public demonstrations, in which they take part massively at every call from the opposition parties and civil society organizations, despite the savage repression, intimidation and obstruction of all kinds, the Togolese people, as a whole, express unequivocally their absolute rejection of any initiative aimed at preserving the dictatorship. The real solutions to the crisis lie in the return to the original constitution of 1992 and its implications, the voting of the diaspora, the unlocking of institutions and the electoral framework, the release of all political prisoners, the end of the repressions and abuses in cities and in the countryside.

In the face of the legitimate demands of the populations, the Togolese power is illustrated by serious violations of human rights, in this case the bloody police violence perpetrated during the repressions of the peaceful public demonstrations, in particular in the cities of Mango, Bafilo, Sokodé and Lomé, resulting in deaths, serious injuries, displacement of refugees in the bush and neighboring countries, destruction of public and private property, arbitrary arrests accompanied by acts of torture and inhuman treatment, and degrading.

The ANC reiterates its compassion to all the victims of the atrocities and barbaric acts committed by the defense and security forces backed by militia recruited, trained and armed on purpose. It salutes the mobilization, the courage and the determination of all the populations on the territory and in the diaspora.

She thanked the Heads of State, including Presidents Alpha Condé of Guinea, Alassane Ouattara of Côte d'Ivoire, Nana Akufo Ado of Ghana and Patrice Talon of Benin, as well as international organizations and partner countries, who became aware of the depth of the Togolese crisis and who are resolutely involved in using their influence in the search for an appeasement.

The superficial nature of the measures announced by the government is not likely to produce appeasement because these measures do not go to the bottom of the subjects of concern, in particular the return to the constitution of 1992.

Nevertheless the ANC takes note of the the release of certain persons arbitrarily arrested and sentenced, the return of certain property seized during the demonstrations and the lifting of the judicial control of the National President of the ANC, leader of the opposition, but strongly protests against the unfounded charges.

It recalls that in the sordid affair of the Lomé and Kara markets, the legal proceedings against Mr. Jean-Pierre FABRE and other persons charged and kept under judicial supervision are unfounded and without any legal basis. In addition, at least 6 people, including former ANC MP Kwami Manti, arbitrarily detained, have been in prison for 5 years in the same case.
In any case, the ANC calls on the Togolese people, including the diaspora, to remain vigilant, mobilized and determined.

Lomé, 07 November 2017
For the National Office,
The Vice-President

Oruko Amutorunwa (Pre-Destined Names) In Yorubaland

Ibeji (Twins) In Yoruba land, one of the most important things done when a child is born is to give the child a name. This comes after the child’s ritual birth, massage of specific body parts and other rites as well. Names are given to the child by the father, mother, grandparents (paternal and maternal) and some close relatives also. But sometimes, the circumstance of a child’s birth will automatically give the child a name. This name is known as ‘orúko àmútọ̀runwá’ (pre-destined or generic name) in Yorubaland. The most common generic names (orúko àmútọ̀runwá) in Yoruba land are ‘Taiwo‘ and ‘Kehinde‘ (altogether known as Ìbejì) which are given to twins. The first born of the twins is called Táíwò, a shortened form of Tò-aiyé-wò (taste the world) while the last born of the twins is called Kéhìndé which literally means “the last to come”. Contrary to the popular belief that Taiwo, being the first born of the twins, is old

It is following confrontations occurred during the mood swings of the 08 and 09 February.  These workers, very dissatisfied with their dismissal, say they do not stop there. They plan, in the coming days, and together with the leaders of the Union of Workers, Managers, Employees of Public Works and Buildings (SOECTRAB), major actions to get into their right. According to Gavor Kodjo, Secretary General of SOECTRAB who defends the workers dismissed by this Chinese company, the reasons why the Chinese company returns workers on construction sites do not hold water. "Workers are indignant against the very low hourly rate that does not even meet the Collective Interprofessional Convention, long hours of work without rest. They are often assigned to workplaces without being paid for the housing or tra
