Most of the detainees held in 2013-2014 in the Kara and Lomé market fire cases returned to their homes on Wednesday. Speaking to Victoire Fm this Thursday, Eric Dupuy, the communication officer of the National Alliance for Change (ANC), gave his assessment of the release of these political detainees.
"6 people who were released, as part of the fires in the markets of Kara and Lomé, there remains a person in the person of Mr Kpogo who was not in this context, but who was arrested, some time after during student demonstrations, "said Jean-Pierre Fabre's right-hand man.
For Eric Dupuy, this release is "a good thing, because it is not easy to spend years in civilian prisons in the country where conditions are not human". The politician would have liked the militant Étienne Yakanou, who lost his life in prison in this case of market fires, to be counted among these political prisoners released Wednesday.
"Today, I have an emotional thought for the Yakanou family who spent his life, leaving him last, a woman and two little girls. I wish that Yakanou was among those released, but unfortunately, we can not bring him back to life, "he regretted.
According to the head of the ANC Communiqué, there is still a Damocles' sword hanging over the heads of those detainees released on bail on Wednesday. "Because," he says, "they are not totally released. They are provisionally released and the charges are on everyone, including the leader of the opposition. "
These releases of political prisoners as part of the appeasement measures show that Faure Gnassingbe's regime "begins by hearing reason."
For Eric Dupuy, Togo must be part of the principles of the rule of law, freedom, democracy as advocated by the Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo, at the opening of the 27th dialogue "Lomé 2018" .
