EVALA 2017: Fraud, Torture and Death of Men

The curtains fell on the highly politicized Evala of this year. At the time of the report, we can mention among others, that there was fraud, followed by noisy disputes which gave rise to clashes and especially that six people lost their lives in a road accident.

This year again, Kara welcomed the traditional, highly politicized, Evala fights. Everything was there. At the time of the balance, the strong media coverage that induces a politicization of what is a rite of a community among the tens that counts the country. As always, ministers, directors of cabinet, central directors, directors of state company, diplomats, moved massively to attend the accession in Kabyè country. And Kara has become the center of attraction of the whole country.

On the official media, the speech is well polished, the events presented in embellishing terms. With as always, in the foreground, politicians, starting with Faure Gnassingbé. And in his absence, his representatives. The official media, which are very much in favor of the Evala, have been careful not to mention the other balance, less laudatory. And yet, things have not yet unfolded as in the best of worlds.

On Thursday, July 20, at Pya, the struggles ended. In the native Gnassingbe village, the ground of the final turned into a real ring where they and each other were not in a codified way to win a prize, but this time to fight some with the other. At the heart of the dog, accusations of fraud. The Pya Haut team, this year, loudly opposed a practice that had been going on for decades.

In reality, since the time of Eyadéma, the Pya Akei team should always win. And so that we do not lose, They organized themselves to make the conditions favorable to it. And the opposing team should be beaten. The practice was tolerated by the different adverse communities of Pya Akei, under Eyadéma who was surrounded by a certain myth and whose teams should always win. This year again, in order to win the junior team of Pya Akéï, mercenaries were solicited against the wrestlers of Pya Haut. The latter having noticed the game, have loudly manifested their discontent which turned into a confrontation, making what is presented as a party a battlefield. As the environment became hostile and chaotic, Faure Gnassingbe had to withdraw discreetly to take shelter.

It is clear that in Togo, fraud is not practiced only during elections. It seems to be present and rooted in the smallest parts of our common life. Fraudulent manipulations are also at the heart of intense polemics surrounding the celebrations supposedly purely cultural, not only in Kara, but also in several other localities of the country.

Speaking of Evala 2017, it will be remembered especially that it is on this occasion that six people including 5 humorists have died. Sunday afternoon, the news went around the country. The comedians Folo, Agbasco and others perished in a traffic accident, while they were returning from the Evala where they were asked to prove. We also report the terrible accident of a former minister named Adzéowoda Dzifa who also came back from the Evala. His car made several barrels and himself seriously injured.

It is certainly one of the biggest spots that will mark the Evala this year. Curious edition, after purported purifications of the country. Is this a sign of the times? No one can say it. In any case, the country still has a year before him to reflect on the contingencies of the Evala 2017

Oruko Amutorunwa (Pre-Destined Names) In Yorubaland

Ibeji (Twins) In Yoruba land, one of the most important things done when a child is born is to give the child a name. This comes after the child’s ritual birth, massage of specific body parts and other rites as well. Names are given to the child by the father, mother, grandparents (paternal and maternal) and some close relatives also. But sometimes, the circumstance of a child’s birth will automatically give the child a name. This name is known as ‘orúko àmútọ̀runwá’ (pre-destined or generic name) in Yorubaland. The most common generic names (orúko àmútọ̀runwá) in Yoruba land are ‘Taiwo‘ and ‘Kehinde‘ (altogether known as Ìbejì) which are given to twins. The first born of the twins is called Táíwò, a shortened form of Tò-aiyé-wò (taste the world) while the last born of the twins is called Kéhìndé which literally means “the last to come”. Contrary to the popular belief that Taiwo, being the first born of the twins, is old
