Over the past three years, 271 people have been killed in protests in 21 countries in West and Central Africa, including Togo. Which makes one dead every five days. This is what a new report, which has just been published by Amnesty International, indicates.
For a while, street demonstrations, although peaceful, have generally resulted in deaths. According to François Patuel, Researcher on West Africa at Amnesty International, the people are afraid to claim their right on the streets.
"It's something that's so common that we do not talk about it anymore. There are deaths during the demonstrations in Togo or Guinea. There was another weekend in Côte d'Ivoire during protests against the mutiny, "he said on Radio France International (Rfi) on Tuesday.
The newly published report reveals that all governments are equipping their armies to suppress human rights defenders, alongside traditional repression tactics, including assassinations.
According to Amnesty International, social networks and new technologies are powerful tools for denouncing gross violations of human rights. So, it does not pass in silence, a retrograde method usually used by the forces of order.
"Isolate groups of demonstrators and take some of the leaders temporarily by placing them in vans and they are moved several kilometers from the venue," she said.
