Let's Talk About Animals On Our Planet(Photos).

Fénec the Soul of the Desert

“The fennec, or desert fox is a canine mammal species of the genus Vulpes, which inhabits the Sahara Desert and Arabia.

With its features ears, this is the smallest species of the family Canidae.

It is endangered and its main threat is illegal in other countries.”

Squirrels plant thousands of new trees each year simply by forgetting where they buried their nut seeds.

In China, killing a Panda is punishable by death.

Squirrels will adopt other squirrels babies if they are abandoned.

Even though lions are known as “King of the Jungle,” they live in grasslands and plains, not the jungle

Lions are the second largest big cat species in the world (behind tigers).

The average male lion weighs around 180 kg (400 lb) while the average female lion weighs around 130 kg (290 lb).

The heaviest lion on record weighed an amazing 375 kg (826 lb).

Lions can reach speeds of up to 81 kph (50 mph) but only in short bursts because of a lack of stamina.

Lions inhabited many areas of Europe until they were hunted to extinction in the region around 100 BCE.

Lions once lived in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, North America, and Northern India.

Now lions primarily live in Africa, aside from a small group (about 300) Asiatic lions that live in India’s Gir Forest.

There are only about 34,000 lions left in Africa.

Lions in the wild live for around 12 years.

African Lions May Be Extinct by 2050.

In the wild, lions rest for around 20 hours a day.

A lion in the wild usually makes no more than 20 kills a year.

The female lion does 90% of the hunting.

Cats have lived with people for over 7,000 years.

Hippos can run faster than humans.

What large animal kills the most people in Africa?

Not the lion, and not the crocodile; it is in fact the hippo.

The males are very territorial and will attack anything that enters their area.

Females aggressively protect their babies.

Hippos have even been known to kill crocodiles.

Cape Buffalo also are also extremely dangerous; in fact they kill approximately two hundred people annually.

They quickly charge and gore anyone they perceive as a threat

Every day of the year, 100 whales are killed by whale fisherman.

The fear of animals is called zoophobia.

No two tigers ever have the same stripes, and this is how individual tigers can be identified.

The smallest bird in the world, the hummingbird is immensely fast and swift.

However, their legs are too weak and tiny to support walking.

The most they can manage is to shuffle sideways.

Hummingbirds beat their wings 60 to 80 times per second.

Hummingbirds are the only birds who can fly backwards, upside down and sideways.

Sharks have been around longer than dinosaurs.

Polar bears are the world’s largest land predators.

The animal on the Firefox logo is not a fox, but a red panda.

Goats were the first animals to be used for milk by humans.

The male goat is called a “buck” or “billy”.

The female goat is called a “doe” or “nanny”.

A baby goat is called a “kid”.

There are over 210 breeds of goats in the world.

China has the most goats in the world, they have over 170 Million.

The life of a housefly is only 14 days.

The lifespan of 75% of wild birds is 6 months.

There are an estimated 400 million dogs in the world.

The U.S. has the highest dog population in the world.

France has the second highest.

It costs approximately $10,000 to train a federally certified search and rescue dog.

According to records there are 50 million monkeys in the world.

There are over 2700 types of snakes in the world and they live in deserts, forests, oceans, streams, lakes.

Four of the five fastest land animals in the world are found on the African continent.

They are the Cheetah, Wildebeest, Lion, and the Thomson's gazelle.

The Wildebeest, Lion, and the Thomson's gazelle can reacha speed of up to 50 mph (80.47 KPH) for short burst.

The Cheetah can hit an unbelievable 70 mph (112.65 KPH) for short burst.

Besides being one of the fastest animals in the world the Thompson's Gazelle has an amazing sense of smell, sight, and hearing.

These senses, along with it's speed, often enable it to sense and escape a predators attack.

The African elephant is by far the largest living land mammal.

It can weigh up to seven tons (6350.29 kilograms).

This incredible animal is an endangered species.

Second in size only to the African elephant are Rhinos.

Adult White Rhinos can weigh in at six thousand pounds (2721 kilograms).

They are known to have a bad temper which along with their size and sharp horn make them extremely dangerous.

There are plenty of vultures in Africa.

This African animal will feed on dead animal carcasses which are often rotting in the hot African sun.

They are well equipped for this type of meal.

They have very strong acids in their digestive system which kills dangerous bacteria in their meal.

A woodpecker can peck 20 times per second.
There are 23 species of crocodiles and most of them are endangered because of poaching.

Crocodile's skin is highly appreciated in fashion industry and represents a status symbol for wealthy people.

Crocodiles live on the Earth 240 million years.

They appeared at the same time when dinosaurs appeared.

Crocodiles vary in size.

Largest crocodile species is Saltwater Crocodile which can reach 13-18 feet in length and weigh up to 2200 - 2200 lb.

The saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), is the largest of all living reptiles, as well as the largest riparian predator in the world.

Smallest crocodile species is Dwarf Crocodile which can reach 5 feet in length and weigh up to 40-70 pounds.

Crocodiles are meat-eaters (carnivores).

They have 24 sharp teeth which are used for killing of fish, birds, mammals and small crocodile (their prey).

Crocodiles don't chew their food.

They tear apart flesh and swallow large chunks of meat.

They sometimes swallow stones to ensure faster grinding of the food in their stomach.

Expression "cry crocodile tears" is based on the true fact crocodiles produce tears when they eat.

They don't cry because they feel sorry for the prey, but because they swallow too much air, which gets in touch with lachrymal glands (glands that produce tears) and forces tears to flow.

They have one of the strongest bites in the animal world.

Muscles which induce closing of the jaw are much stronger than muscles which open the jaw.

Because of that, people can use their bare hands to keep their mouth closed.

Crocodiles can be often seen with their jaws wide open.

They open their jaws to cool themselves because they don't have sweat glands.

Only crocodile's belly has a gentle skin. Skin on their back contains bony structures (called osteoderms).

Crocodiles have excellent eyesight (especially during the night).

Their eyes can be seen as red dots while peeking from the water during the night.

Crocodiles and alligators are not the same.

Crocodiles are larger, have V-shaped jaw and some of their teeth can be seen even when the jaw is fully closed.

Alligators are smaller, they have U-shaped jaw and their teeth are not visible when jaws are closed.

99% of crocodile babies will be eaten in the first year of their life by large fish, hyenas, monitor lizards and larger crocodiles.

Most crocodiles live 50-60 years in the wild. Some crocodiles can live more than 80 years.

What a catch: An osprey and a fish.

A cheetah can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (95 km/h) in just 3 seconds.

Anacondas are the largest and heaviest known snakes.

They can be found in tropical rainforests, lakes and swamps of South America.

Anacondas are especially numerous near Amazon and Orinoco rivers.

There are 4 types of anacondas.

Although they are large in size, scientists can't find them easily because they hide in the water.

People hunt anacondas because of their skin which is highly appreciated in the fashion industry.

Luckily, they are not endangered.

Anaconda can be 30 feet long (like a school bus) and weigh up to 550 pounds (like 11 kids).

Females are larger than males.

Anacondas grow constantly their entire life.

They are usually dark green in color, have 2 rows of black spots on their back and white marks on the sides.

Anaconda hunts on the ground and in the water, but it spends most of its life in the water where it moves more easily.

When it is in the water, whole body, except nostrils (which are located on the top of its head), is submerged.

Anaconda can stay under water for 10 minutes before it comes to the surface to grab some air.

They like to eat fish, turtles, caimans, capybaras, pigs, jaguars, deer.

When they hunt smaller meal, they eat up to 40 pounds of food per day.

Large meal will keep snake satiated few weeks and it will not eat during that time.

Anaconda is not a venomous snake.

It uses strong and muscular body to kill its prey.

Like other constrictors, anaconda will grab its victim, wrap its body around the prey and squeeze it until it dies from suffocation.

They capable of squeezing a full grown tiger to death.

When animal dies, anaconda swallows whole prey in one piece.

They can regurgitate if threatened (vomit swallowed prey).

Anaconda is nocturnal animal, which means that it hunts during the night.

April and may are reserved for mating.

Six months later, female anaconda gives birth to 20-40 young anacondas.

Babies are 2 feet long and they are capable for individual life from the moment they are born.

Anacondas live 10-12 years in the wild and up to 30 years in captivity.

Ibeji (Twins) In Yoruba land, one of the most important things done when a child is born is to give the child a name. This comes after the child’s ritual birth, massage of specific body parts and other rites as well. Names are given to the child by the father, mother, grandparents (paternal and maternal) and some close relatives also. But sometimes, the circumstance of a child’s birth will automatically give the child a name. This name is known as ‘orúko àmútọ̀runwá’ (pre-destined or generic name) in Yorubaland.
