If there is a way for the Togolese people to say otherwise that he wants the alternation and then to make it clear to Faure Gnassingbe, it is perhaps the moment to find arguments to convince him. Because, given the speech that served the head of state yesterday, his departure from power is not yet on the agenda.
This observation comes from two essential points that Faure Gnassingbé, in his message of wishes, mentioned Wednesday. First, it makes projects that spread over 5 years under its governance. This means that in 2023, Faure Gnassingbé is still there, in power. While the reason for the descent of Togolese in the street is none other than his departure, even before 2020.
Then the Head of State already predicts the failure of dialogue that is not even started yet, since always holds to the organization of "his referendum". He mentioned it implicitly in his speech.
"It is with this in mind that last September I took the initiative of proposing to the national representation a revision of the constitution which now limits to two the number of presidential and legislative mandates and which introduces, for the election of the President of the Republic a single-ballot system with two rounds. In accordance with our fundamental law, it is now up to the entire Togolese people, the sole holder of national sovereignty, to decide. In the rule of law that we are building, we can not pretend to substitute more authorized votes for universal suffrage, "said Faure Gnassingbé.
This attitude of brandishing the dialogue and at the same time preparing clandestinely the referendum that the Togolese people rejects in its majority, borders on a contempt for the real aspirations of the governed.
In any case, the announced dialogue is imminent. The mediators are busy for its holding in the coming days. Only the future will lie on the fruits of these foundations.
