Since the 2015 elections, when it has been proven that only 30% of the Togolese population have a piece of identification, nothing is done visibly. The 70% are still without ID. For good reason, the costs of establishing these pieces that are not within the reach of all scholarships. And the Martin Luther King Movement (MMLK) challenges the government on this situation.
Why demand so exorbitant and huge fees to citizens before acquiring identity documents in Togo? "For example to have a national identity card it takes 5000 FCFA and have this amount is difficult for the Togolese. To have a certificate of origin, you have to pay 20,000 FCFA. FCFA 17,000 officially and related costs, "said Pastor Edoh Komi, president of the MMLK.
However, the Togolese Constitution in Article 32 stipulates that 'Togolese nationality is granted by right to children born to a Togolese father or mother'. And justify:
"Today Togolese must normally be entitled to their identity documents since it is a constitutional right but are found without paper".
"As it is a constitutional right, I would like all the pieces of identification to be free of charge or to have the fees down to make it affordable for everyone," he suggested.
