The leaders of the Action of Christians for the Abolition of Torture in Togo (ACAT-Togo) and the Christian Union of Young People (UCJG / YMCA) are worried about the deplorable conditions of detainees in Togo. On Tuesday in Lomé, they launched a vast campaign called "dignity in favor of the prisoners".
According to the initiators, this campaign is part of the project "Access to justice and rehabilitation of vulnerable young people in Togo". The objective is to address the challenges of prison conditions in some prisons across the country.
To help improve the living conditions and detention of outlaws, the initiators intend to conduct a tour of capacity building of key players, visit the prisons of Lomé, Tsévié, Aného, Atakpamé, Kpalimé Sokodé and Kara. It will enable observation reports to be produced to help, for example, implement the recommendation of the Universal Periodic Review relating to this topic.
"We have planned a number of actions, including the training of prison supervisors in Togo, targeting 6 prisons for training tours, advocacy for improving the conditions of Prisoners are taken, "said Gérard Kokou Atohoun, Secretary General of the UCJG.
The conditions of detainees in Togo are no longer to be described. At the Lomé Civil Prison, for example, there are more than 2,000 prisoners to be detained for 666 persons initially planned.
