The head of state inaugurated a new cement production plant in Kara, in the peripheral locality of Awandjelo about 420 km from the capital Lomé. The unit is a subsidiary of the Cimtogo company with a production capacity of 250,000 tons of cement per year.
It is the biggest German investment in Togo since the resumption of cooperation with Togo, a private financing of the Heidelberg Cement group. The cement plant in Awandjelo will now be able to serve the northern part of Togo and spare the country, harassment linked to the distribution of cement by trucks with all the difficulties related to it.
It is also an opportunity to overcome the endless shortages according to the minister of mines and energy in his inaugural speech. Togo, formerly the 4th largest cement producer in the subregion (behind Senegal, Nigeria and Ghana), is able to overshadow the level of first sub-regional producer with its new capacity of 2,250 million tons per year.
The development of the industrial sector is expected to exceed the annual GDP of this sector in the economy and create jobs. The Awandjelo cement plant will create almost 500 direct and indirect jobs.
The Kozah region has a good quality limestone reserve of around 150 to 200 million tons. There are also some in the Dankpen in spite of the reserves of the South where production units have already been installed for decades. The installation of production units in the North makes it possible to reduce the disproportionality of industrial installations in the country, since Lomé alone has an industrialization rate of 80% compared to national coverage.
