Only 1.23% of Togo's exports to the US benefit from the benefits of the Growth Act (AGOA). While Togo will be co-organizer of the next AGOA forum from 08 to 10 August in Lomé, the government wants to rectify the situation.
The negligible capacity of the country for processing local products, the language barrier and, above all, the absence of a policy of accompanying actors wishing to benefit from AGOA, are among other things justifying low exports under the AGOA according to expert analysis.
Given that this is an invaluable opportunity, particularly for boosting the private sector and attracting jobs, the government is launching an applied policy to increase exports to the OGA. This strategy will "identify key sectors or streams to maximize actions while taking into account the demand of the US market", as recommended by Lotfi Kourdali, Deputy Program Manager at the Trade Hub office.
In 2016, exports of Togolese local products to Uncle Sam's country are estimated at US $ 10,855,000, including US $ 134,000 under AGOA.
