At least 6,000 products from sub-Saharan Africa are covered by the US tax exemption provided they meet quality standards. The Togolese textile which is among these products, has received a visa to be exported to the USA.
The information was given on Wednesday at a conference at the Agoa Forum (Africa Growth and Opportunity Act) by Robert Lighthizer, a direct representative of Trade in Washington.
By this "textile visa", everything that is "typically Togolese fabric" and what is made from Togolese textile can be exported to the Usa, explained Bernadette Legzim-Balouki, Minister of Commerce.
Besides these fabrics, several organic local products such as the chocolate produced in the Viva center and the Shea butter of the Alafia center are very popular in the American market.
Voted and promulgated in May 2000 by the US Congress, under the aegis of President Bill Clinton, Agoa allows the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa to export to the US market without customs duties.
This law, which was due to expire in September 2015, was extended until September 30, 2025.
