This is the message brought to the press on Saturday at the Royal Flamani palace of the Adjigo and allied to Aného, in the presence of the traditional chief of the city of Aného, Nana Ane Ohiniko Quam Dessou XV. From now on, degrading rites are part of the past for the Adjigos women.
When the spouse dies, the ordeal begins for women adigo with rites for, it is said, honor the memory of it. And who refuse to do so exposes itself to the criticism or violence of society. Among the Adjigos of Aného, these rites were spread over a long period. "The woman whose husband died knelt on palm hulls for days. She was interned in a hut where the little chilli was set on fire. She had no right to cough. If she does, she is automatically taken for the perpetrator of the death of her late husband. In this box, she must also breathe the foul odor of a urine that has been a week, "said Komla Abraham Bruce, the head of the practitioners of customs and habits at the Adjigo.
The decision to alleviate widowhood rites according to the Adjigo community follows a consultation with the ancestors who accepted the request of their sons and daughters. By way of gratitude, a white ram, a cock and a chicken were sacrificed this Saturday at the royal palace. And those women whose duration of rites is reduced to a single day, owe it to the NGO Alafia. This NGO has been working since October 2016 to eradicate widowhood rituals that are in fact violence against women.
