Assiba Johnson, president of REJADD-Togo, currently in the north of the country, testifies to the abuses committed by the security forces and the military over the civilian population in Bafilo. And yet, the demonstration was allowed. Here is his testimony!
On observation mission yesterday 20 September 2017 in Bafilo. Everything started from a dispute between the police forces who asked the organizers to have the letter authorizing the demonstration in Bafilo.
Being an observer of human rights, playing the same role as facilitator between the police and the demonstrators, I called Mrs Brigitte ADJAMANGBO and I put her in touch with the police forces on this subject. Afterwards the police gave me the number of the préfet that I handed over to Mrs. Adjamagbo. She sent me after a text message that she called the prefect and that walking is not prohibited.
I even called the préfet to inform him of the concern of the security forces. The préfet told me he would call the police. Afterwards, the security forces asked me what the préfet said and I told them that he told me he would call them.
After a few minutes, another police force, which did not frame the march and was stationed towards the road leading to the bypass, began by firing tear gas at fragmentation, causing 77 wounded including 6 cases very serious, evacuated in the evening on Sokodé. The 6 are since last night at the CHR of Sokodé under intensive care.
