The President of the Republic, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, was on a field visit on Thursday at the Kodjoviakope border crossing, a crossing point between Togo and its western neighbor, Ghana.
During this visit he recalled the urgency and the need to apply the ECOWAS rules on the free movement of persons and their goods in this geographical area, which comprises more than fifteen countries and 300 Millions of souls.
"I visited aflao border post between Togo and Ghana this afternoon. Opportunity for me to exchange with the heads of post, customs officers, users and populations on the conditions of crossing our borders. The testimonies reinforce me in the idea of going faster in the construction of an ECOWAS respectful of the texts bequeathed by the founding fathers, "Faure Gnassingbé said after the outcome.
This was an "unexpected" visit which enabled the Head of State to ensure the application of the Community texts with regard to the free movement of persons and goods. "I spoke during my election at the head of the ECOWAS to build the CEDEO of the peoples. One of the fundamental rights remains the free movement of goods and persons. Through this visit, it is a question of ensuring the application of the Community texts, "he added.
On the spot, he told the press to be informed of all the difficulties that the populations face to go from one point to another of the border. "We know what the reality and the complaints of the people are. We want to ensure that the practices are in total conformity with the texts and this is a first observation. We must continue the efforts initiated by ECOWAS to facilitate the free movement of the populations of all member countries of this organization, he said.
Faure Gnassingbé took the leadership of ECOWAS on 4 June at the end of the 51st General Assembly of the organization held in Monrovia, Liberia.
