Ige Olatokounbo bid farewell Togo


Arrival at the head of the United Nations Regional Center for Peace and Disarmament (UNREC) in July 2015 in Lomé following the closure of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Togo, Institution for which she was the representative resident in Togo, Ige Olatokounbo bid farewell to this country so dear to her eyes this Wednesday.

"Togo is my country," said the Nigerian at the end of this last audience that Mr Gnassingbé granted him as Director of UNREC.

In her view, the issue of disarmament remained a matter of concern in Africa. And to find solutions, it is always necessary to be in discussion and negotiation with the member states of UNREC.

However, she said she was confident that Togo had taken another step in disarmament with the weapons marking operation.


"Togo has started with us in the project of weapons marking. For us it is a good step, we have an example to share with other countries about the importance of weapons marking so that weapons do not fall back into the hands of terrorists and criminals, She congratulated.

UN agency, UNREC assists countries in peace processes and initiatives in Africa, as well as in arms limitation and disarmament. It also helps member countries to control the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

Togo now has its plan to combat land degradation

Land degradation is a reality in Togo. According to figures put forward by the Ministry of the Environment, each year 4.14% of the land (nationally) succumb to the phenomenon. And it is in response to the problem that the Government launched last March, the Program of definition of the national targets on neutrality in land degradation (PDC / NDT). On Thursday in Lomé, environmental experts validated a document that will serve as a blueprint for sustainable land management in Togo. This document, which estimates that 23,500 hectares of land are degraded each year in Togo between 2000 and 2010, has already identified national targets assessed on the basis of indicators such as land use, net productivity or carbon.
