Not judging is a general rule of life. However, there are those days when you don’t mean to judge because you are a bad person but it is because some things are beyond your understanding. In such cases, it is always best to leave things be.
One of the things I believe that falls into this category is the issue of domestic violence and the women who stick around rather than leave, even when they have the chance to. You see, this matter is quite complex, and not as straightforward as many of us assume. Even though some women stick around out of cowardice, you should recognize that sometimes one cannot just up and leave.
She might be going through hell but you can’t ask her to leave her life behind and walk away just like that. It takes a form of unprecedented courage. Also, she might be holding on in faith and you can’t really blame her if that is what she is doing. There have been success stories where the wife held on and a change was effected. It takes wisdom though, to know when to hold on and when to move on.
Therefore, don’t come from nowhere and expect her to walk away without a backward glance. What of her children and the time, efforts and investments she has made? What of the prayers she has offered? You don’t even know half of her story. Don’t say she is a fool. Don’t make a choice for her. You have no idea what keeps her in that home. So can you just support her instead and pray for her?
