On Wednesday in New York, The United Nations will pay a well-deserved tribute to the seven Togolese peacekeepers who died on the battlefield in Mali in 2016.
While they were in Mali for the peacekeeping operation on behalf of the UN Integrated Multidimensional Stabilization Mission in Mali, seven Togolese soldiers left their lives in a terrorist attack on their convoy . This is what earned them tributes on Wednesday by the United Nations.
The latter will be posthumously awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal in a ceremony attended by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The Minusma is a UN peacekeeping mission in which many have left their lives in the same way as Somalia in 1993-1995, which recorded more than 70 peacekeepers killed in operation.
In total, 117 peacekeepers died during the operation last year.
