The national report on the 2nd cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) was presented on Tuesday at a workshop organized in Lomé by the State Secretariat of the Ministry of Justice and Relations with the Institutions of the Republic , In charge of human rights.
According to the report adopted on 16 May in Geneva, Togo accepted 167 of its 195 recommendations to Togo on human rights, 26 of which are already implemented. 28 did not gain the support of Togo.
The member and observer States of the Human Rights Council congratulated Togo for accepting the vast majority of the recommendations made. This reflects Togo's full support for the UPR process.
The Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Nactar FALL, congratulated the Togolese government for its voluntary commitment to the fight against human rights violations through the Universal Periodic Review. He then reiterated the support of his institution to accompany Togo in this process.
The Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice and the Relations with the Institutions of the Republic, in charge of Human Rights Nakpa Polo, declared that the recommendations of the second cycle of the Universal Periodic Review To encourage Togo to strengthen the gains made and to continue to improve the human rights situation.
"Togo is engaged in a vigorous fight against the violation of human rights, which has enabled it to obtain a general satisfaction rating from the council given the percentage of implementation of the recommendations accepted under Of the first cycle of the UPR, "she added.
The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a unique mechanism of the Human Rights Council aimed at improving the human rights situation in each of the 193 member states of the United Nations. Through this mechanism, the human rights situation of all UN member countries is reviewed every five years. 42 States are reviewed annually during the three sessions of the UPR.
These sessions are usually held in January / February, April / May and October / November (Togo's last visit to the UPR Commission took place on 31 October 2016). It should be noted that the result of each examination is a final document listing the recommendations made to the State which it must implement before the next examination.
